What We Do

Restoration Experts & Emergency Responders

The Historic House Trust’s main effort is the preservation and maintenance of 23 historic house sites located throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

  • Since 1989, HHT has facilitated over $100 million dollars in capital restorations.
  • HHT is often required to respond with agility to emergency needs at our historic houses in order to keep this collection of sites secure, safe, and open to the public.

Strong As One Team

Of the 23 historic sites, 19 are operated by separate nonprofit entities. HHT advises the staff and boards of these houses on administrative and financial issues, thereby augmenting professional standards at these small nonprofits. HHT also regularly brings together the directors of these associations to work as a team.

Community Resources & Extensions of the Classroom

Education residents, schoolchildren, and visitors about New York City’s rich social, economic, cultural, and architectural history is central to HHT’s mission. HHT works with educators at the houses, offering guidance and expertise to help them strengthen the sites as museums and fulfill their roles as essential community resources.

  • Since 2009, students from 91.2% of all New York City public and private schools have visited an HHT house.
  • HHT supports preservation learning opportunities for students, using our houses as case studies, at the Williamsburg High School for Architecture & Design and the Mather Building Arts & Craftsmanship High Schoo.

Collections Specialists at the Ready

In order to help protect the historic collections of its member houses so that future audiences may enjoy and learn from them, HHT provides curatorial assistance to its historic sites.

  • HHT assists with the preservation, interpretation, and exhibition of over 90,000 irreplaceable artifacts.
  • HHT facilitates its award-winning Roof Raisers Curatorial Brigade, a group of over 100 volunteers who fulfill an important role in the continued maintenance and accessibility of these historic objects.
  • HHT’s Contemporary Art Partnerships program brings site-specific contemporary art installations and experiences to HHT sites, drawing new audiences and reflecting on the diversity of the communities in which our houses are located.
